FAYETEVILLE, N.C. – By the time Pharaoh was 9 years old, he had already developed a strong love for music. He remembers growing up in the projects with his cousin, using a scrounged-up tape recorder to record themselves as they sat around free-styling some of their favorite songs from Tupac, Nas and Jay Z. And though he admits he wasn’t that great back then, he knows he’s developed quite a bit over the years and now his music is getting the attention of all kinds of fans.
That fan base is sure to grow even more after the release of his newest single, “New Wave Alert.” It’s a song that he said basically speaks for itself in that he’s putting out a notice to people that there’s a new wave of sound coming from his camp.
“It’s pretty much me talking about my changes as an artist,” he said. “I got back into my past to show people this new wave that I’m on and where I’m headed next. It’s a song that’s more upbeat and I think it could rock out in the clubs, especially with the second verse, which has a lot more build to it.”
It’s a song that he says has a distinct vibe and which fits in well with his catalog of other songs he’s created over the years. In fact, he prides himself on being a versatile artist who likes to experiment with a lot of different sounds and styles. For this single, he dabbled with auto-tune, something he doesn’t usually do much of in his music. But no matter the style of the songs he creates, he said his voice will always be distinctive and full of energy.
“Sometimes I sing and sometimes I rap and sometimes I do some of both,” he said. “It just depends on the song and what the song requires. Right not I’m putting out stories of my life and things I’ve witnessed. I also have certain songs that when I go to the studio, I’ll lay down whatever is on my mind. But more than anything, I want people to think first and foremost that this is real, raw rap. I want them to be able to hear my music and be motivated. And no matter what circumstance they’re in, I want my music to uplift them and encourage them to go out and hustle as hard as they can so they can get out of whatever situation they’re in. Basically, I’m bringing positive vibes with my music, for the most part.”
As he’s pursued a career in music, he’s always looked up to those greats that he used to listen to as a young kid. And he hopes to create a similar career – eventually winning a Grammy or BET music award and developing a worldwide fan base. Much like the Pharaohs of old who were the kings of their vast empires, he wants to become a rap king. That’s why he adopted the moniker Pharaoh, and why his latest single is putting people on notice that he has arrived.
