Positive energy oozes out of new music from Kansas City artist Pdot

KANSAS CITY, MO – Phoenyx Wiggins – known in hip-hop circles as Pdot – has a naturally curious mind. He’s always wondered about the intricacies of music-making. He remembers being younger listening to songs on the radio and thinking about how those songs might sound if they had different instrumentation or beats. In fact, it was that natural curiosity that eventually drove him to experiment with sounds on his own.

It first started when a friend introduced him to a beat-making software. As he began to use the software to satiate his curiosity, he began to create his own instrumentals to some of the familiar beats he heard on the radio. Eventually that evolved into making his own beats.

“And then I started rapping on them,” he said. “I had all these beats and I was eager for someone to rap on them … so I just did it myself.”

Today, his style is unique and influenced by an eclectic group of some of his favorite artists – such as Kanye West, Daft Punk, Chief Keef, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Coldplay and Modest Mouse.

“I listen to any type of music because I just love music in general,” he said. “The influence around me and the people around me tend to listen to hip-hop, rap and R&B; that’s why I tend to make music in that genre. But I have made a couple of EDM tracks and jazzy tracks.”

As his mastery of making music has continued to grow, his curiosity has taken him down more paths toward understanding the entire process of the industry. Eager to learn how to produce, engineer and master a track, he turned to YouTube and began learning from some of the experts who gave away their knowledge to anyone who would listen. When those lessons hit a certain ceiling, Pdot decided to start visiting studios around his city to sit with producers or audio engineers so as to watch and listen to what they do in the studio and gain some hands-on experience. And all the while he continued to experiment with his vocals and instrumentation to see what sounded the best.

Today, his music is something that he hopes brings joy and inspiration to anyone who hears it. In fact, he’s intentional about bringing forward a positive energy when recording his music – so much so that he makes sure to smile every time he’s laying down a vocal track.

“I used to work at a call center and they would teach us how to talk to people on the phone,” he said. “One of the things they taught us is that if you smile while you’re talking to somebody, it makes a big difference in how your voice sounds. And it really does. I can hear it personally. That’s why I try to smile when I record, so that I can project that into my music and into someone else’s life. I want to pass along that positive energy, so when I record I try to be upbeat and very energetic. I even move around when I record so I can generate that energy to put it in the music, and hopefully the mic will catch that.”

Pdot is in the midst of releasing a number of individual singles so as to build a fan following and eventually lead to the release of a larger project later this year. His single “Kodak Drop” is the most recent release, and is currently available for fans to check out on his Soundcloud page.
