JA: Give us some background info as to who you are.
Kidricc James: My stage name is Kidricc James. I’m an underground Rap veteran and MTV’s Fight Klub “King of the South.” I’m from the Acres Homes neighborhood located on the North Side of Houston,TX. My story is the typical single mother household story. I sold drugs, robbed, gangbanged, etc. I’m from the streets and I’ve actually lived what I put in my lyrics. Nowadays I’m more about trying to reverse the damage I caused.
JA: What is the significance of your stage name?
KJ: I had 4 deals. I previously went by the name K.I.D and dropped 5 projects. I would always refer to myself as my current name. I changed my stage to make sure nobody would ever eat off me again and I became independent. My stage name Kidricc James is a reflection of my personality but also a symbol of homage. Kidricc James refers to “The son of Rick James and the nephew of Sweet James.” They were both flamboyant characters but also stood as men. The were musical geniuses and created their own lanes.
JA: Who is your target market?
KJ: My target market is anyone that appreciates lyricism with a mixture of consciousness and gangsta. Imagine Gucci Mane with a Nasor Jay Z flow and then you begin to understand who I am as an artist.
JA: What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition) and what sets you apart from other artists?
KJ: What sets me apart is the fact that I’m not trying to fit in. I actually care about the culture. I’m not in it just to eat. I actually love it. I make sure that I have a unique sound. My music is a reflection of ghetto life around the world. It is something you can learn from but it’s not too preachy.
JA: What single or project are you currently pushing?
KJ: I am currently pushing my single “Not Trying To Fit In.” Also I’m working on a new EP. It will be the first gangsta rap album with no cussing.
JA: What is the philosophy by which you live by?
KJ: My philosophy is be authentic. You have to stand for something. My mission is to Help the helpless and be the voice of the unheard. I want to return the focus to lyricism.
JA: Which artists have inspired you?
KJ: I’m inspired by artists that have substance in their lyrics. I love all types of Music except Country music. I love the artists that change the game and overcome struggle. I respect folks that care more about making timeless music and not just money. My musical inspirations include Drake, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and Eminem.
JA: Who does your production?
KJ: I’ve worked with multi platinum producers such as Sean Blaze, Cory Mo and others. I typically like up and coming producers. I work with Peety Smooth, Killa Tex and a few others.
JA: What is your opinion of the current state of the music industry and If you can change one thing about the music industry what would it be and why?
KJ: I hate the fact that everyone is trying to sound the same. I miss the competition of the game. I miss the anticipation of hearing the next bars an MC spit. I’m glad as well though because the game is wide open. Being indie has become better than having a major deal if you know what you’re doing. If I could change anything it would be how we treat our vets. Hip Hop pioneers don’t get the respect they deserve.
JA: Are there any singers that you would like to collaborate with in the future?
KJ: There are too many to name. I want to work with anybody that still spits real lyrics. I like Big Krit. I think that we could do a dope song together.
JA: What is your favorite movie and favorite book?
KJ: I’ve got a lot of favorite movies. I like anything that’s about real life people that keets it gangsta. Also I like documentaries. I’m fascinated with people. My favorite book is 48 Laws of Power.
JA: What is your EP or Album going to be like?
KJ: My project will sound like a breath of fresh air. If you are tired of hearing the same type of songs and want something you can feel then press play and zone out to my music.
JA: Any final words for the people.
KJ: I’m your new favorite rapper. That’s what I want folks to know.
